#AmWriting is LIVE

Blog
Knowing what you know now of writing, publishing, and putting your art out into the world, if you could go back to the day you sat down to start typing in your very first manuscript, what words would you offer to yourself? Words of encouragement? Words of advice? Caution against certain pitfalls? Would you change anything about how you got to where you are today? The publishing community is so much bigger than it was before the self-publishing boom and it continues to grow exponentially every day. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with a handbook or support group. #AmWriting is a collection of letters written by authors from all different corners of the publishing community. The letters provide words of encouragement or advice to those just starting out or those who…

the course of true love never did run smooth ~ A Midsummer Night's Dream Act 1, scene 1, 132–140   I'm not a romantic at heart. I didn't play 'wedding dress up' when I was a child, walking down a pretend aisle with a pillow case over my head. Nor did I daydream about meeting 'the one'. I was career-minded with a yearning for independence. I wanted to be successful in whatever field I chose, and I had a very strong sense of never wanting to have to rely on a man, for anything. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't anti-boys. Quite the opposite. But even when I had my first serious boyfriend when I was 15/16 years of age, I still knew, deep down, that things would most likely end when we…

Ideas, ideas. Ideas everywhere…

Every time I hit publish on a book, my mum asks me 'do you have plans for another story?' To which my response is always 'oh, I have some ideas'. That's a lie. I don't have some ... I have a lot. Lately, it seems I have a never-ending supply. So much so, that I'm actually finding it difficult to decide which story to pursue next. One day, I really want to write the one with the angst and gritty romance, and then another day, I'm all about the more touching, heartfelt romance. And don't forget the bad boy meets spoiled rich girl one. Truth be told, this should be a great position to be in. For someone who is trying to make a career of writing I kindof rely on new and…

nothing is impossible, the very word itself says I'm possible   I don't proclaim to be a diehard fan of Audrey Hepburn. She represents a time that resonates little with me, but the quote coined by one of Hollywood's most iconic actresses is one of my favourites, one I use often. You see, if someone had said to me two years ago - when I first started writing - 'in two years time, you'll have self-published eight full-length novels and have attended four author events and signings', I probably would have laughed in their face. Me, an author? Never. Impossible. And yet, here I am. The other weekend, I attended my fourth author event in the beautiful city of Leeds, and it was the first event I have felt entirely comfortable with my identity…

Who am I again?

Who am I again?

In last week's post, I talked about Pressure. About how she drives me and motivates me and pushes me to keep going. Since writing that post, I've been thinking a lot about the pressures I put on myself and I realised something... that whilst Pressure is my friend, she's also an eraser of sorts. Let me explain. If someone was to ask me 'who are you?' I would probably use any number of labels to describe myself: Mother, Wife, Author, Stay-at-home-mum, Sister, Daughter, Graduate, Thirty-something... but that doesn't really tell you anything about WHO I am; about the things that make Lianne Cotton tick. Things she enjoys, her quirks, fears and phobias. It doesn't give people an insight into the woman that, on the front of it, is confident and self-assured,…
