Impossible, or I’m possible?

Blog
I've talked before about how hard it is as a newbie author to measure success. Writing, editing, and preparing a manuscript for publishing is, in itself, a feat. And hitting publish? That, right there, is something to be proud of. But once you hit that button, and your book goes live - that's the real test.  Will people buy it? Will they read it and enjoy it? Tell a friend or two, maybe? Honestly, I didn't put much weight behind hitting publish on Fate's Love. Sure, I knew it was a big deal for me, but I didn't pop a champagne bottle, or go out for a fancy meal. It was a surreal experience - like, 'am I really doing this?' And then something even more surreal happened... People started buying…

Does it ever get easier?

Blog
In less than two weeks, I hit publish again for the second time. It should be easier, right? It doesn't feel easier. In fact, I think I'm more terrified than the first time. Sure, the formatting is easier this time around (I just used the template set up for Fate's Love) and I have the cover, plus a whole host of blogs that participated in Fate's Love promo signed up for this release...BUT I can't help all the niggles. What if the release is a flop? What if no one reviews? What if people do review, and the reviews suck? What if sales don't surpass Fate's Love? It's so close to release day, I'm almost beginning to think that I've been a little too relaxed this time. With Fate's Love I was…

Weekly Roundup – November 2nd

Blog
Did someone say NaNo? This is actually a fourteen-day roundup, as I didn't post last week, due to not having internet access. See, we moved house last weekend and life got in the way. I didn't realise how much I would miss being able to sit down at my laptop and write once the little people were asleep... but I missed it. A lot. However, I was also so exhausted that I was in bed my nine most nights. Now I am trying to re-establish my writing and blogging schedule, but it's hard. I feel all over the place... good job it's NaNoWriMo time then!     NaNoWriMo I tried CampNaNo earlier this year and failed! But this time round, I feel like it could be just the motivation I…

Listen, are you hearing me?

Blog
We are constantly listening. We listen to news reports on the radio or TV, we listen to our partners telling us about their day at work, we overhear conversations at work or in the street. We are forever being bombarded with auditory information that we have to listen to and digest. But how much do we actually listen? In the Level 2 Counselling Skills I am currently attending, we are being trained to be 'listeners'. Yes, I know what you're probably thinking. Does one need to actually be trained in how to listen? Well apparently yes, yes one does! Anyway, so each week we spend half an hour working in triads, role-playing 'listening encounters', in which one of us plays 'listener', one plays ' listenee', and the other observes the interaction. We…
